Hymn-Tune Composition Competition

Father Paul Joseph Volk (1841-1919) was a German-born Catholic missionary to Kentucky and Latin America.

In observance of the 100th anniversary of Father Volk’s death, the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph commissioned Father Harry Hagan, OSB, to write a hymn text celebrating his life and work. Composers are invited to compose a hymn-tune for the text for the congregation and any performing forces of their choosing (organ, piano, guitar, orchestral instruments, choir, or even unaccompanied voices).

Competition Details

1. Composers serving in liturgical ministry (professional or volunteer) in
the Diocese of Owensboro are eligible to submit one or more musical
settings of the text.

2. Settings must be submitted in hard copy to Lauren Johnson at the
McRaith Catholic Pastoral Center (600 Locust Street, Owensboro, KY
42301) by 4:30 p.m. on February 14, 2019. An email address must appear
on the last page of each composition submitted.

3. Selections will be sent to a group of liturgical composers residing
outside the diocese for evaluation. Names and email addresses will be
deleted from all musical manuscripts before being sent to the
evaluation team.

4. The winner will be announced on February 28, 2019.

5. The winning hymn-tune will be given the name “PAUL VOLK.” The
composer retains all rights to the music but gives the Ursuline Sisters of
Mount Saint Joseph the right to perform and reprint the music for a
period of three years beginning on March 19, 2019. Should the music
eventually be published by a commercial publisher, the Ursuline Sisters
may continue using pre-existing copies of the music.

6. The winning composer will receive a $500 award for the competition.
